Southerners Not Applying For police Jobs – Police Spokesman

The Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, has said the Nigeria Police extended the online registration in the ongoing 2021 police constable recruitment to Saturday, January 22, 2022, to allow Southerners apply.

In a statement on Wednesday, Mba said the extension became necessary “to ensure equal opportunity and even spread of applications, particularly from states in the South-East, South-South geopolitical zones and Lagos State.”

He said the extension would enable the southern states to meet up with the required quota for their respective states.

Giving a breakdown of the applications received so far, Mba said out of the 81,005 applications received nationwide as of January 7, 2022, only 1,404 applications (less than 2% of the total applications) were received from the five states in the South East.

MBA added that only 261 were from Lagos State, adding that Anambra has the least figure of just 158 applicants.

Consequently, the Force appealed to states, local governments, religious bodies and other interest groups in the South-South, South-East and Lagos State to mobilize and encourage their citizens and wards to seek a career path in the Nigeria Police Force.

“Interested applicants are urged to log on to the NPF recruitment portal to register before the expiration of the new deadline,” he said, adding that the recruitment exercise is absolutely free of charge.

Boko Haram Still In Control Of 2 Borno LGAs - Governor

Governor Zulum

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum on Wednesday revealed that Abadam and Guzamala Local Government Areas in Borno state are still under the control of Boko Haram sect.

This revelation by the Governor corroborated the statement earlier credited to the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Abdulkarim Lawan who told Journalists recently that 99% of communities of Guzamala Council area where he hail from are under the control of Boko Haram.

The governor stated this when Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume led other senators including military officers from the army headquarters in a courtesy call on Zulum at the Government House.

Zulum said; ” I am pleased to inform you that we have started witnessing gradual return of peace, but more need to be done, because, presently, Guzamala and Abadam Local Government Areas are still under the control of Boko Haram.

“Although, the current Service Chiefs, the Theatre Commander, and indeed our General Officer Commanding 7 Division are up and doing. We want to commend the military and other para military personnel for their gallant efforts to see to the end of terrorism in this part of the country.

“Unfortunately, Government and people of Borno state, especially those from southern and northern parts of the state are worried over the increasing number of ISWAP groups who have been terrorizing their communities.

“Just few days ago, I recieved a security report that in some communities of Mandaragirau axis in Biu Local Government Area, there are reports that over 500 Boko Haram/ISWAP groups have been converging with over 300 motorcycles and even celebrating parties/marriages amongst themselves without confrontation.

“ISWAP are more equipped, sophisticated, intelligent and dangerous as they grow from strength to strength.

“ISWAP are collecting taxes along major roads in Damboa and other axis in southern Borno. It is very unfortunate.

“But the good news is that about 11 local Government areas of Gwoza, Bama, Marte, Monguno, Kaga, Gubio, Mafa, Dikwa, Ngala and host of others are becoming more peaceful than before, and this could be attributed to about 20,000 surrendered members of Boko Haram who are now in our custody.

” I want to use this opportunity to solicit for prayers from all and sundry for total restoration of peace not only in Borno state, but the country as a whole.” Zulum stated.

Ndume earlier in his address told the governor that they were in Borno to assess the security situation and to thank Borno State Government for its unflinching support towards restoration of peace and end the carnage perpetrated by terrorists in the north east region.

Police Arrest Man For Growing Marijuana Outside President’s Office

South African police Wednesday uprooted cannabis plants grown by indigenous activists who have camped outside President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office for more than three years, AFP reporters saw.

Their leader, wearing a traditional loincloth, clung to a shoulder-height plant as police dragged it across the presidential lawn in Pretoria before arresting him.

“Police… you have declared war,” he shouted. “We have been here peacefully. We are coming for you,” warned the man, who calls himself King Khoisan South Africa.

The Khoisan were formerly known as Bushmen or Hottentots — a name coined by Dutch settlers in the 17h century, reflecting the clicks characteristic of their languages.

During the raid, another activist yelled in Afrikaans at the police, asking them: “For plants? For plants? You are rubbish people in uniforms.”

The group’s tarpaulin tents have been a fixture on the emerald lawns of the South African president’s office since 2018 when they began a campaign for official recognition of their languages.

One of the tents is just metres (yards) away from a giant bronze statue of Nelson Mandela, the country’s first black president.

Around two dozen police, some in riot gear, others mounted on horseback, and some with sniffer dogs raided the small group.

Police did not respond to AFP’s request for comment, but journalists heard officers on the scene saying the raid was over the cannabis planted some six months ago in the activists’ vegetable garden.

In 2018, South Africa’s top court decriminalised the private and personal use of cannabis in a landmark case that pitted law enforcement agencies against advocates of the plant, known locally as dagga.

South Africa’s Khoisan community is thought to number in the hundreds of thousands.

Allow Your Daughters To Join Nigerian Army – Government Tells Parents, Guardians

The Yobe State Government has urged parents and guardians in the state to allow their daughters to join the Nigerian Army in order to help in defending the territorial integrity of the country.

Special Adviser on Security Affairs to Governor Mai Mala Buni and Chairman, Yobe State Recruitment Committee, Brig. Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd) gave the charge while fielding questions from newsmen at the 241 Recce Battalion Nguru, venue for the 82 Regular Recruitment Intake screening exercise for the state.

He said it is important for the journalists and other relevant stakeholders to sensitize parents across the 17 local government areas of the state to encourage their daughters to join the Army.

“You know, because of cultural and religious issues it is very difficult for females from this part of the country to join the army”, he lamented.

On the current screen exercise for the 82RRI which commenced on the 2nd of January, Brig. Gen. Abdulsalam noted that based on the principle of Federal Character, the Nigerian Army has shortlisted 1,500 candidates for Yobe State where, after the exercise, only 140 are expected to make the final list.

Talking about the transparency of the recruitment exercise, Abdulsalam said, “the Nigerian Army recruitment is the most transparent of all recruitment exercises. Anybody that is not shortlisted will not take part and the result will be announced here on the ground”.

When also asked whether there is political interference in the recruitment screening exercise, the Chairman denied any political interference in the exercise.

“No politician has any influence on this recruitment exercise, because this is not the final, if we take anybody that is not competent Yobe state would lose because when it gets to Falgore, they will drop unfit candidates and use other available candidates to fill the slot. So, there is no interference as far as Nigerian Army recruitment exercise is a concern”, he stressed.

It was gathered that among the 1,500 candidates shortlisted from the state, only four female candidates made it to the current stage as the screening exercise continues. The exercise is expected to end on the 16th of January, 2022.

Two Nigerians were left dead during the shooting and three were arrested, including Ogbeifun.

The officers gave chase while exchanging gunfire with the suspects.

The chase came to an end at the Gillooly’s interchange, where three Nigerian nationals were arrested. A fourth suspect was allegedly found dead next to where the vehicle had come to a halt, according to the police report.

Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong: Governorship, For Us Or For The People

Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong

Courtesy: Fresh Air Media

Most often than not, political offices have been manned to the bane of the people, leaving behind the ill impression that any nursed interest of governing is targeted at self enrichment to the lucullan detriment of the people.

Regrettably doleful it truly is that this assertion cannot be wholesomely debunked as falsehood, seeing how ravenous and covetous many politicians become upon ascendance to office, howbeit! It would be a gross injustice to the crop of genuine and good hearted leaders and individuals, who are propelled by their zest to effect a positive change in the system and possibly change the status quo to hastily generalize them in the ill set.

If tandems are traced to the quiet and subvocal dealings of Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong, in the private sector, his common decisions and choices and how they affect his environment, immediate world and the people, one would need no much ado to gain appropriate cognizance of his disposition.

Worthy of note is the fact that, indices to good leadership transcends the margins of manifestos, lavish giftings and expenditures in the wake of an election and promises made on celebrated political and campaign platforms.

The erstwhile lifestyle of an individual before the declaration of interest and or the ascension to a political office should be the barometer upon which his disposition, paradigm of leadership and possibly the quality of his person should be measured.

Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong, amongst his contemporaries stands today as the highest private employer of labour and his developmental strides surpasses the records of many who have had the luxury of federal allocations and the statutory responsibility to develop their states or constituencies.

Without any deliberate attempt to appraise his contributions to the society, an act he sees as his compulsory social responsibility, i cannot sweep under the carpet or dare negate to reconsider the intention behind his concentrative investment in education, but following the words of Nelson Mandela "Education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world", this intention is therefore brought to the fore.

Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong, has from aeons been a selfless and empathetic individual, one who seldom attends to issues affecting himself as against his dedication to the welfare of others, it is upon this background that the decision to run the 2023 gubernatorial race of Cross River State is premised.

I urge all Cross Riverians therefore, to look beyond the lavish expenditures of political elites who have over the years amassed wealth from public funds for themselves, whisk away from the whims and caprices of these politicians, who have mastered the art of deception and the tricks of vote buying.

We have the future of Cross River in our hands come 2023, we can either restore the state to glory or bury it in damnation.

A Vote for Sir. Arthur Jarvis Archibong, is a Vote for a New Beginning.

Truly, Cross Riverians need a "Breath of Fresh Air".

Those Against Zoning Are Agents Of APC, Anti-PDP - Governor Wike

Governor Wike

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike on Tuesday said members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are saying the presidency should not be zoned are agents of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and people working against the interest of the party.

Former Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who is interested in contesting the 2023 presidency had said on Monday that the presidency should not be zoned to the South.

Wike spoke when he visited Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to commiserate with him on the death of the Olubadan of Ibadan land, Oba Saliu Adetunji.

“Forget about the people saying there should not be zoning. It is just a distraction. For me, those doing that are agents of the APC and they are not helping the party. Whichever way, we must sit down and take the best decision that will make Nigerians to be happy; that will make us to win the election.

“There is no basis for anything we do that won’t make us win the election, because it means we still want Nigerians to suffer and they cannot just continue to suffer. They have suffered enough in the hands of APC and God will not forgive PDP if we don’t rescue Nigerians,” he said.

“And I believe you are one of the people doing well in your state. We must take a decision. Not taking a decision means that there is no leadership. It is not like a situation we have in the APC where they will say one thing today and, tomorrow, they will say another thing. They don’t even know who is in charge. But you are in charge of Oyo State and you are doing well,” Wike told Makinde.

Wike said he and others had come to let Makinde know that it was important for them as a party to unite a lot of Nigerians who were waiting for the PDP and that the party could not afford to lose this opportunity.

“The governors must be united. It does not matter who would be the party’s presidential candidate. Once the party and governors are united, I can tell you that the victory is on our way. So, the unity of the governor is key to making sure the party gets it right.

“It was the way we were united that made us produce the National Chairman and the best National Convention, which got Nigerians surprised. We should also do the same by working hard to produce the presidential candidate, who will win the election for the PDP. This is because if we lose it this time around, Nigerians will not be happy with us.

“We cannot allow this evil they call APC to continue and that is why they cannot put themselves together. So, God has used people like you to unite the party and to organise the best convention. Mine is going around telling our people to let us work together as a party so that we will be able to stand APC in the next general election. We must all rally round anybody the party produces to be the presidential candidate and make sure that we win the election,” he said.

Wike further charged Makinde not to be distracted by criticisms, urging him to continue to do well, while also charging his aides and residents of the state to keep supporting him.

“People must criticise, even in a family, it happens. So, be focused and don’t be distracted. Continue to do well. This is a public office and not the same with a private business but that experience has helped you a lot to move the state forward.

“I also want to urge your aides to continue to give you the needed support. Most people fail because of their aides, because they are not committed. But for you to have travelled for some days and things still worked, it means your aides are committed and I want to commend you all. You are a part of those that have changed Oyo State,” Wike added.

Speaking, Makinde said Wike had shown leadership in piloting the affairs of Rivers State, saying he had shown leadership nationally and in pushing for what was right and just in the affairs of the party.

“We can only pray for more strength and good health so that you will continue to render your service, at least, till the end of your tenure in Rivers State.

“For us in Oyo State, we are following in your footsteps by giving dividends of democracy to our people. It is all about serving the people.

“You mentioned just now about individuals jostling for the Presidency of our country under our party’s banner and what they need to know. Well, you have demonstrated it, and this is what we are doing in Oyo State. It is not seeking power for the sake of wanting to be in power but for the sake of making our country and our state a little better than the way we have met it. This has been demonstrated time and time again, especially in Rivers State and that is what we are also doing here.

“The unity, especially that of the governors of our party is paramount and most of the successes we have recorded so far are really because we are together,” he said.

According to Makinde, 2022 would be a decisive year in the agenda to rescue Nigeria from the disaster brought upon it by close to seven years of APC leadership at the centre, hence the importance of the visit by Governor Wike and the unity among the PDP governors.

“This visit is timely and appreciated, because 2022 is the year when the political parties will take decisions on who would fly the flags of their parties, from the Presidency to even the lowest positions.

“This is a year we have to take serious decisions, because whatever we do and whatever the outcome is, Nigerians will have to live with that for the next four years.

“The past seven years have been a real disaster. If you look at the data, an economy that was growing at the rate of 5 to 6 per cent yearly before then suddenly became poor. We went into recession and we thought we were coming out but still went into another recession.

“Meanwhile, the population is also growing at an alarming rate. So, just like our party has been pushing, this is the time to rescue Nigeria. We have a serious role to play in that effort,” Makinde added.

Ebonyi State Governor Declares For President, Visits Buhari

By Williams Anuku

Governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, has disclosed that he has formally informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to run for All ProgressiveS Congress (APC) ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

This is coming barely 24 hours after former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, declared his ambition to contest for the presidential ticket as well.

The governor, who said the President advised him to consult widely, said he was not perturbed by Tinubu’s entry into the race as he believes that the contest is not about might.

Umahi, who left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC in 2021, reiterated his earlier stance that the former ruling party was not ready to cede the 2023 ticket to the southeast, adding that he stands a chance if the APC throws the ticket open.

He said if he gets the opportunity, his presidency will replicate his efforts in Ebonyi State at the national level, saying that he has a lot to show in running governance as business.

The Ebonyi Governor said he supports a political solution to the insecurity problems in the South East, noting that economic activities of the region have been greatly impacted.

Salah Swallowed Up By Super Eagles As Nigeria Defeats Egypt

The second true heavyweight match of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations saw Nigeria take firm control of Group D with a 1-0 victory over Mohamed Salah and Egypt.

After Monday's game between Morocco and Ghana saw the Atlas Lions come away with a 1-0 victory, we were treated to another matchup of expected title contenders, and the result showed one side is far more prepared to push for the crown than the other.

Liverpool superstar Salah was entirely locked down, with little to show for his 90-minute effort as Nigeria smothered the Egyptian playmaker. Kelechi Iheanacho's early goal proved the difference as Nigeria fended off a late Pharoahs push to claim all three points.

Both teams are expected to progress from Group D despite today's result, but Nigeria's victory sets the Super Eagles up nicely for a better Round of 16 matchup and a deep run deep in the tournament, while Egypt will feel added pressure in its other group stage matches against Guinea-Bissau and Sudan.

Ayade Swears-in Customary Court Of Appeal President, Others, Promises Salary Increment For Judges

The governor of Cross River State, Professor Ben Ayade, Tuesday swore-in Justice Maurice Eneji as the new President of the state's Customary Court of Appeal.

Also sworn-in were four new High Court Judges and four Customary Court judges.

The new four High Court judges are Justice Obo Agbor Anthony, Justice Ititim Felix Igobi, Justice Dada Eunice Oshim and Justice Ankpor Jeremiah Arong.

The Customary Court judges were Justice Daniel Ofre Kulo, Justice Rita Otu Marshall, Justice Odibu Emmanuel Ekanya and Justice Obin Blessing Egwu.

At the event held at the State Executive Council Chamber, Ayade decried the poor salary structure of judges in the country, vowing that despite the lean financial resources, Cross River will be the torchbearer in upping the standard of living of judges by reviewing their salaries.

The governor said he would meet with the state House of Assembly to ensure the new salary structure for judges takes effect by the first of March.

According him, "this is a very clear statement that will charge the whole federation to look into the issue of the salary of judges.

"From the 1st of March, the salary of our judicial officers in Cross River State will be changed for good. We will increase your salaries so that other states can know that Cross River, which is number 35 out of 36 states in terms of federal allocation can increase the salary of judges. If Cross River State can increase the salary of judges which state will not increase? It is a way to compel them to increase the salary of judges because it is sad that you put a man in such a sensitive position and expose him to temptation by leaving him on the same salary scale for 13 years."

According to the governor, "Cross River State will enact the appropriate law in partnership with the legislature so that by March, we will have a new salary structure for our judges."

He charged Justice Eneji and the new judges "to be shining examples of Cross River."

Further admonishing them, Ayade said: "Be a shining star, be that agent of change that will bring fairness ,justice, goodness, kindness and sincerity to the judiciary as a whole.

"As you hold your Bible today while taking the oath, do not forget the significance of that Bible, let your God be your watchword, let indeed, the fear of God be your guide because your children and grandchildren will reap from what you do.

"Let it not be that when you judge on earth and by the time you go to heaven to be judged you will be sent to hell."

He reminded the judges that both the common man and the elite solely depend on the judiciary for justice as the last bastion of hope and must not, therefore, compromise justice.

In his remarks, Justice Eneji who was a one-time acting Chief Judge of the state, described Ayade as the most judiciary-friendly Governor.

He recalled that the governor assumed office in the heat of restiveness in the Cross River judiciary due to backlog of unpaid allowances but was able to calm frayed nerves.

"Let me say this on record, Your Excellency, you are the most judiciary-friendly governor. This is the third time you are swearing-in judges into office. And also, before you came to office, the judiciary was owed a backlog of allowances for about two years, unfortunately, you came on board when the judiciary staff were angry and decided to go on strike but in your humane nature, you gave us your word and said from this day on, this is what I can do, Your Excellency, you kept your words till date," Justice Eneji stressed.

The new President of Cross River Customary Court of Appeal commended the governor for facilitating the take off of the Court in the state, adding, "what people do not know is that without the Customary Court of Appeal, we are short-changing ourselves because the money is already voted for, but because we didn't utilise it, the money is used elsewhere for those who have Customary Court of Appeal."

He appealed to Ayade for a more expansive and befitting judiciary headquarters in the state as according to him, the existing one is too small for Cross River judiciary.

C'River: Ex-militant Leader, Tompolo Sponsored Ayade In 2015, Wike Is Sponsoring Me Too - Senator Onor Admits

Senator Onor

The Senator representing Cross River Central Senatorial District in the Senate, Senator Sandy Onor has admitted being sponsored by the governor of Rivers State, Barr. Nyesom Wike, for next year's governorship election in Cross River State, GRASSROOT REPORTERS has gathered.

Governor Wike has been criticized by many for interfering in the affairs of Cross River State, though the governor denied the claims in a recent meeting he had with some stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja.

The governor is alleged to be the brain behind the governorship ambition of  Senator Onor.

Onor, in an interview with journalists at the NUJ Press Centre, Calabar, on Tuesay,  was asked to clarify the speculation that Wike is behind his governorship ambition.

He revealed that the governor of Cross River State, Prof. Ben Ayade, in 2015, was sponsored by former Niger Delta militant leader, Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, adding that there was nothing wrong for one to get support from someone outside the state to actualize his or her ambition.

Senator Onor maintained that he has close political ties with Governor Wike,  stressing that he and Wike were also old time friends.

He said:

“I cannot run away from such question. I know that it was coming. It is true that I have closer political friendship with Gov Wike.

“There’s no politician who has serious ambition at any time that would not have key persons to give him political supports, and sometimes finance.

“Mr Donald Duke had Dangote. Liyel Imoke had Obasanjo. Gov Ayade had Tompolo, etc. It is not only in Cross River State. It is not a new thing. You want to go for the presidency, you must have international networks of friends and supports. So, if I have Wike as my old-time friend expressing happiness at my aspiration, what’s wrong with it?” He queried.
