Salah & Son Heung-min Emerges English Premier League Joint Top Goalscorer

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah and Tottenham's Son Heung-min will share the Premier League's Golden Boot award after finishing the season tied on 23 goals.

Egyptian Salah began the final day one goal clear of the South Korean at the top of the scoring charts.

Son scored twice in Tottenham's 5-0 win at Norwich but Salah struck late on as the Reds beat Wolves 3-1.

It is the third time Salah has won the award.

He previously claimed the Golden Boot in 2017-18, when he scored 32 times, and in 2018-19 season, when he finished with 22 goals.

In the latter case, Salah was involved in a three-way tie at the top of the scoring charts alongside his Liverpool team-mate Sadio Mane and then-Arsenal forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Salah's total of 23 goals this season includes one hat-trick, which he scored in a 5-0 win at Manchester United on 24 October.

Twenty of his strikes had come by 12 March but his scoring form tailed off after that, with two in a 4-0 win at home to Manchester United on 19 April and one more against Wolves.

Mohamed Salah scored in seven Premier League games in a row between August and October

In contrast to Salah's finish to the season, Son struck nine times in his last 10 games, including six in his final five, to shoot up the scoring charts.

He managed one hat-trick this season, in a 4-0 win at Aston Villa in April.

"It's incredible to have this award," Son said. "I can't believe it. I got really emotional. I dreamed of it as a child. Literally it's my in hands. I can't believe it."

Ederson and Alisson share Golden Glove

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson and Liverpool number one Alisson share the Golden Glove award after finishing the season on 20 clean sheets each.

Ederson has missed just one game for the Premier League champions this term - a 2-0 win over Burnley in October - while Alisson was only absent for the Reds' 5-0 win at Watford in October and the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in January.

The duo finish ahead of Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, who ends the campaign on 17 clean sheets.

Ederson was the outright winner of the award in each of the past two campaigns, while Alisson won the award in 2018-19.

Playmaker of the Season

The Premier League's Playmaker of the Season award, which was introduced in 2017-18 for the player with the most assists, also goes to Salah.

The Egyptian ends the season on 13 assists, one better than his Liverpool colleague Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Salah has now reached double figures for goals and assists in four of his five league campaigns at Anfield. The only time he failed to do so was in 2020-21, when he only set up five league goals.

Salah's Liverpool team-mate Andrew Robertson, Chelsea's Mason Mount and West Ham's Jarrod Bowen all finish the campaign on 10 assists.

Man City's De Bruyne Wins EPL Player Of The Season Award

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne has been named Premier League Player of the Season, beating competition from Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Tottenham’s Heung-min Son to win the award for the second time.

De Bruyne has scored 15 goals in 29 appearances from midfield this season, while supplying a further seven assists, and has been pivotal to putting City on pole position to retain their Premier League title.

City will beat Liverpool to the title if they defeat Aston Villa at home on the final day of the season on Sunday.

De Bruyne was previously named Premier League Player of the Season in the 2019/20 campaign, and it means a City player has won the award in three consecutive seasons after Ruben Dias picked up the prize last year.

Salah, who leads Son by a goal in the golden boot standings, was named the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year earlier this month.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarrod Bowen, Joao Cancelo, Bukayo Saka and James Ward-Prowse were also shortlisted for the award, which is voted for by fans, team captains and a panel of experts.

De Bruyne’s Manchester City team-mate Phil Foden was named Young Player of the Season for the second year running earlier on Saturday.

Basketball: D'Tigress Rejects Nigeria's Ban On International Competitions, Vow To Take Part In World Cup

The Nigeria women’s basketball team, D’Tigress have expressed their disappointment with the recent two-year international ban placed on the basketball federation by the Nigerian government.

It was earlier reported the move by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, led by Mr. Sunday Dare, to restore peace in the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and also help build a better atmosphere for the sport to flourish in the country.

The Ministry banned all national basketball teams, including D’Tigers and D’Tigress, from participating in international competitions for two years.

But the women’s team, in a series of tweets on Friday morning, stated that they disagreed with the move by government, and insist on representing the country at the 2022 FIBA Women’s World Cup billed to hold in Australia.

The three-time Afrobasket Champions, who already qualified for the tournament, stated that they had worked so hard to be playing at the level they currently are, and would like to be given the opportunity to continue to soar.

The Full Statement

To whom this may concern,

We, as the Women’s National Team of Nigeria would like to speak on the government’s recently placed two year ban on all Nigerian Basketball International competitions.

The D’Tigress team would like to state that we do not agree with this ban. This ban is taking away all our future competitions, accomplishments and goals to elevate, inspire, and make Nigeria proud!

We would like to be given the opportunity to play for our country that we passionately love to represent in this upcoming FIBA WWC competition.

We have worked very hard to be 3x Afrobasket Champions, Olympians and now we are blessed with another opportunity to continue that representation for Nigeria.

We want Nigerian Basketball to continue to grow and succeed on every level; from the local leagues, grassroots and even on the international stage!

We believe that all levels of Nigerian basketball can excel with the proper attention, togetherness, and organization. Our team is a testament to how successful Nigerian Basketball can be and how we have been an inspiration to all Nigerian athletes across the globe.

We wish to express our gratitude to all the coaches, medical staff, organizers, and fans. This ban not only penalizes us but you all as well. Your commitment and loyalty to our team will never go unnoticed.

Barcelona Striker, Aubameyang Retires From International Football

Barcelona striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will no longer be representing Gabon after he announced his retirement from the national team.

The 32-year-old is the top scorer in Gabonese history, with 30 goals to his name in 72 internationals.

He made the decision public via an open letter to the Gabonese federation.

“After 13 years of pride representing my country, I am announcing that I am ending my international career.”

“I would like to give thanks to the people of Gabon and all of those who have helped me in the good and the bad times.”

He then went on to thanks several more people including the President of the Gabon FA and all of his managers. It’s worth remembering that Aubameyang didn’t participate in the African Cup of Nations this January due to medical reasons. Some had wondered if they were sent home due to disobeying team regulations, but this was denied by the player.

He did also have a special note of thanks for one person in particular.

“Finally, I give thanks to my father, who gave me the desire to do as he did, hoping that I’ve been able to make him proud seeing me in our colours.”
