Students of tertiary institutions in Cross River State have accused the bursary committee set up by the senator representing Cross River North Senatorial District, Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe of fraud.

Senator Agom had set up the committee to shortlist and make payments to students of northern Cross River extraction studying in tertiary institutions.

Some of the students who spoke with GRASSROOT REPORTERS said their names appeared on the scholarship list with a different bank account numbers, which was used to fraudulently siphon the monies.

One of the students, Ayeni Success, in a letter to the Senator said the account number used to receive the money does not belong to him.

He noted that in the list, he was said to be studying law in Federal College of Education (FCE) Obudu, whereas he is a law student of the university of Calabar.

His letter partly read:

"Sir, may I very respectfully draw your attention to the intentional fraudulent misrepresentation of facts and a deliberate attempt to divert for personal use by the committee the funds approved out of your goodwill and magnanimity as busary for students of the Northern Cross River extraction. In the list published by the committee two days ago, over 60% of names do not correspond with the bearers account numbers and most of the names are not students known to our senatorial district. For instance sir, I was captured number 3 as a beneficiary from my political ward but a different account number was attached to my name. Sir you will agree with me that the strength of receiving this busary rest squarely on the correctness of account number and nothing more hence it was a deliberate act to make public my name and then giving what belongs to me to another afterwards. This is indeed a clear show of fraud by this committee considering the fact that this very act of wickedness was done not just to me but to many names in that list hence the very logical conclusion that it was deliberate as such act is beyond mere error." Ayeni wrote

A former Students Union Government President of the University of Calabar and 200 level law student of UNICAL, Comrade Afufu Anthony said the list was fraught with ghost names.

Comrade Afufu noted that one Mr. Agbaka Monday Ogar with matriculation number: 19/10314012 in Faculty of Law in University of Calabar is never a student of the above faculty or in LLB 2 class.

He said the Faculty of law matriculation number in Unical begins with 19/07 not 19/10, adding that the said recipient is not his classmate in the faculty of law, University of Calabar.

The President, National Association of Cross River State Students (NACRISS) Worldwide, Comrade Akpeke Peter said a different account and phone number was inputted for him.
